This is a class assignment.

I have selected a yoyo (the model is the Duncan Butterfly). I must "determine the essential aspects of this three-dimensional object, which [I] will use in order to communicate its nature in two-dimensional reductive representations."

Have I accomplished that?

Would someone recognize that it's a yoyo just by looking at it? I think it definately resembles a yoyo-like object (which could also be a thread of some sort).

To me the "essential aspects" of an object does not mean to illustrate the light/reflective patterns of the surface, but rather the shape of the object, especially since you mentioned to illustrate this object in a 2D reductive representation. And as such, I think the current representation is a highly detailed one, based on the reflective nature of the object.

Of course this is only my personal interpretation.

Yes, I think a lot would depend on the meaning of "reductive" and "essential aspects" in this case.

If it's to merely simplify the image then I would still like to see some of the string around the centre of the yoyo (if it is visible in the original image) and I find the break in the string slightly distracting and worrying.

If it is to show the essence of the object then I would expect to see an indication of what it does, with a bit more design to help simplify it.

I think it would probably look more like a yoyo if you put some string in it, because I couldn't tell what it was right away.

Thanks for the replies. For reference, here are a few reductive drawings from the past that my teach says are some of the best. I pulled them from SJSU's site, and some personal sites as well.

Scissors found on metaffect.com

Jack's found on http://www.flickr.com/photos/audreyeakin/3272576858/sizes/l/

As you can see... these are quite effective.
