Patience and Persistence
Description Bill Porter was born in 1932 with cerebral palsy. CP affected Bill's speech and his entire body (especially his right side). Despite his challenges, Bill graduated from high school. Rather than receive disability payments, Bill wanted to work and earn his living. After many rejections, Bill convinced the Watkins company (Portland, Oregon) to give him their worst route in order to sell their products door to door. With his determination and mother's encouragement (she would write little notes such as "Patience" and "Persistence" for him to find in his pockets or with his lunch). Bill eventually became the top salesman at Watkins.
Watkins products can still be purchased from Bill today at

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent." – Calvin Coolidge
