Family Vacation
Description
Created entirely with filled vector shapes, this is easily the most detailed illustration I have ever done. With over 100 hours of time, some parts of this illustration are so detailed, they can be enlarged to be their own illustrations. There are 5 members of my Family in this, including myself, plus several guest stars you may recognize!

my god, man....that's just a crazy insane amount of detail. this is a monument to patience.

Thank You! I would have thought it would have been better received, however it is not well liked either here nor DeviantArt, go figure!

i don't think a lot of people really get vector art yet, and i know they don't get realistic vector art. they seem to expect vectors to be either swirly designs or cartoonish drawings. i don't have anything against people who do those types of things. it's just not what we like to do. we like realistic illustrations, but that seems to go against what a lot of people expect from us. so i guess we're the black sheep, but keep it up. after all, who wants to be appreciated in one's own time? ;-)

Well said, I agree with what you are saying. It seems a lot of the graphic element style is far more popular than actual illustrations. After I finished this one, I decided to do stuff much less detailed as it ended up being a waste of time!
21 October 2008 - 15:07: Kevin (annihilist) replied...
it's not a waste of time - unless you base all your work on what others think of it, which in that case would be a waste of time. for me, the true joy is the process. it's calming for me, and the reward i get from seeing my work slowly come together a piece at a time is the best part of all. any comments or acclaim i receive is a bonus to the real joy of just doing the work.
21 October 2008 - 15:22: Randy Jones (rjonesdesign) replied...
Don't get me wrong, I just think it's ironic that illustrations with technical merit rarely get noticed, while inking and linework always do.
21 October 2008 - 17:16: Kevin (annihilist) replied...
true enough. oh well, we understand the value of it, even if some others do not.

Randy, I don't know what to say about this, other than it is one of the best illustrations that I have seen in a long time. Wonderful in it's detail and the execution of the subject. I really like the reflection of the crowd, particularly the flash going off from the camera (you, I imagine) and the background of Cinderella's castle is awesome. The signature in the Walt Disney font is a nice touch. My mouse-eared hat is off to you. Bravo!!!

Thank you for looking closely! There truly is a lot of details going on in this, a few of the characters can be enlarged to 24 x 36, and still have photographic details. (That is indeed me snapping the photo! All pictures used in this were taken by me also)

Your art is in a class by itself. There is so much to look at, I could find little surprises everywhere. Once again, Bravo!

Unbefreakinlieveable! I doubt I'm alone when I say "Show us the wireframe." We have to see it.

Fantastic work, Randy.

Randy!
Gotta love this! It really is a vector masterpiece!
From one detail freak to another... BRAVO!
What I enjoy about this is simply the crisp, clean cheer of the entire image and how it is very evident by all the positive energy you put in it that you love your family very, very much.

Thanks a lot! I really put a lot into this one!

This is an amazing piece! I understand what you're saying about people not appreciating vector art - especially beautiful pieces such as this one but it'd be a shame for you not to continue to produce such amazing work.
21 October 2008 - 20:33: Randy Jones (rjonesdesign) replied...
Thanks for looking closely! I will continue to do commercial art, but truthfully, putting this much effort into something....I did a fanart illustration right after this that only took a few hours, and that got TEN TIMES the attention this got. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that people liked the fanart, but it had absolutely no technical merit to it. I would rather they appreciated more complex pieces. I don't know, guess I'm just getting burned out.
22 October 2008 - 11:07: Dustin Watson (watdogg10) replied...
I know the feeling. Either way, just know that your hard work and beautiful details are appreciated by those of us who truly know what goes into a piece like this.

just had to add my 2 cents. Great job. nice to see something realistic but not looking like a photo. Don't see the point in those. Nice style to it.

Thank you much! I wanted to do something with this amount of details and make it not look like it had a lot of details. It took longer than most of my other illustrations for sure!
