Description
This is part of a project to do portraits of the commanders of the 13th Bomb Squadron.
Lieutenant Colonel Karl J. "Buck" Shawhan is the 2005-2006 Air Force Operations Fellow in the Project Air Force (PAF) at Rand Corporation. After graduating from Northern Arizona University in 1986, he was commissioned from the Reserve Officer Training Corps. He began his career as a navigator in B-52s, subsequently attended pilot training and has been a B-1 pilot since 1991. He has served as a Flight Commander for the 9th Bomb Squadron; the Director of Plans and Programs for the 28th Bomb Squadron; and the Director of Operations for the 7th Operations Support Squadron and, during Operation Enduring Freedom, for the 7th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the School of Advanced Airpower Studies. In his most recent assignment, Lt Col Shawhan commanded the 13th Bomb Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base and deployed as the Deputy Commander of the 40th Air Expeditionary Group.
I became aquainted with Lt Col Buck Shawhan several years ago when he was commander of the 13th Bomb Squadron. A Cleveland Ohio native, Buck's family was noted for distilling pure Bourbon and rye whiskies. In fact the term Bourbon associated with fine whiskey was first put into use by the Shawhan Distillery.
Lt Col Buck Shawhan was the last B-1B Lancer commander of the 13th Bomb Squadron at Dyess Texas. His aircraft was known as "The 8th Chadwick" and carried the "Wheel" logo that signified that he was the commander of the Grim Reapers of 13th Bomb Squadron, a 13th tradition dating back to the Korean War and WWII.
Today the 13th Bomb Squadron is a B-2 Squadron at Whiteman AFB in Missouri.
