Description
The teens, 20's and 1930, were the golden age of American motorcycles. It was estimated at that time in the early 20th Century, there were nearly 200 motorcycle manufactures in the United States alone. With names like Indian, Harley-Davidson, Yale, Cyclone, Flying Merkel, Emblem, Croker, Excelsior, Thor and a host of others, it was an exciting time. Racing became a way for a brand to make a name for itself. Racing on horse tracks, hill climbs and on elaborate Board Tracks, motorcycle racing was extremely popular. Some of these bikes were no more than motorized bicycles with small single cylinder engines with belt drives. There were also a large number of more sophisticated v-twins motorcycles, but the most impressive motorcycles of the day were the big four cylinder motorcycles developed by the the Henderson brothers Bill & Tom. The Henderson brothers came from a heritage of early car designers, but their passion was of the two wheeled variety. The Henderson's built the finest four cylinder motorcycles of the Golden Age. Big, fast, reliable and expensive, the Henderson Motorcycle was undoubtedly the king of motorcycles, nothing could compare in speed, comfort and durability, they were simply unequaled. In 1913 Carl Clancy on a Henderson, became the first motorcyclist to circle the world. Record setting became part of the Henderson mystique. Wells Bennett set countless long distance, speed and endurance records on Hendersons, some of these records still stand today as a lasting testament to the quality of the Henderson Motorcycle. The last Henderson Motorcycles were built in 1931, "The World's Finest Motorcycle" was no more.
