Was old school, pencils, pens and airbrush, now digital. My speciality is technical stuff for local industry and a national magazine. Been working with Illustrator since v3, but still don't understand most of it! Thank heavens for sites like this with experts and tutorials, or links to the knowledge.

Description
Having cut my mesh teeth on the Jag I dug out an old line drawing I did years ago for an instruction sheet. This is now rendered in a mixture of gradient fills (mostly) and meshes - all the glass dish and some of the metal. The top surface of the base is a larger mash than shows as it is masked to the correct shape as I find this easier and quicker than getting the mesh to fit the shape and all the blends to look right. This approach is probably a result of my airbrush background, cut a mask and then spray away.

I make a lot of use of masks as well. There's a reason that option is available in Illustrator- because it works. You can cut a TON of time out of a design by masking instead of working a mesh or blend into a specific shape. I see no reason in doing it any other way, other than proving to yourself that it can be done (and cramping up your wrists, if you're into the whole pain thing). Oh, and nice job on the design. :)

Good realism here! the water and the shiny surfaces look sweet! I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks Machineman. I'm working on some more but most of my work is just boring b/w techy stuff.
