I am a graphic design professor at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Before going into teaching full time two years ago I ran a freelance graphic design business for eighteen years in Southern California. I use Illustrator professionally for logo design. The work you see here is done for pleasure rather than profit.
China Clipper Pilot
China Clipper Pilot
Description
I twisted my 16 year old son's arm to pose for this (Dad, someone might see me!). He looks like his mother, thank God, and this is a very good likeness. He's wearing my replica leather flying helmet. The jacket is actually a confederate calvary officer's jacket, illustrated to look like suede leather. I could not find any good scrap for the China Clipper flying boats, so I send away for a little kit and glued it together before taking pictures of it. I was careful to take all the shots at the same later afternoon time of day to keep the lighting consistent. I have a hard time faking things, so I always work with photos as reference.

Conversation With Don Henderson (Yankeedog57)
Excellent illustration! It has a real aviator feel to it. One criticism and this in no way takes away from this beautiful piece, but pilots who flew the Clippers, dressed in traditional airline uniforms, not in the leather open cockpit style of a barn stormer. They were a pretty elite group flyers looking more like Naval officers. The PanAm Clippers were a high class operation. http://www.postcardpost.com/pabo46.jpg

Thanks, Don. While doing my research I found a still from a movie with Humphrey Bogart as a China Clipper pilot and he was dressed pretty much like a modern day airline pilot, you know, boring looking. The jacket in my illustration is actually a Confederate calvary major's shell jacket (a reproduction). The imagery in this piece is more an alternate universe thing than an attempt to create an historically accurate representation that would pass muster with aviation history buffs such as yourself. I like your style too, by the way.
