M1 Mountain Type
Description This is the Big Gun! The Pennsylvania Railroad's M1a Mountain Type locomotive was built to haul the heaviest express passenger trains as well as the fastest freight trains on the PRR. The versatility of being able to handle anything made the M1 a very popular locomotive on the Pennsy. Here are just some of the specs: 4-8-2 wheel arrangement with 27 inch diameter Cylinders with a 30 inch stroke. The eight driving wheels were 72 inches tall and the weight on those drivers was 271,000 pounds! The total weight of the M1a and tender was a whopping 768,360 pounds, that's almost 400 tons!
This illustration is based on a photo I took at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania of the only remaining M1 locomotive No. 6755.
